영국에서 말 한마디 잘못했다가...

미 대통령 후보 밋 롬니가 올림픽 관람차 런던 갔다가 NBC 인터뷰에서 이런 얘기를 했어요. (이하 발번역 주의)

“It's hard to know just how well it will turn out. There are a few things that were disconcerting, the stories about the private security firm not having enough people, the supposed strike of the immigration and customs officials, that obviously is not something which is encouraging,” 

"음 얼마나 잘 될지 모르겠어. 내 생각엔 몇 가지 불안한 점이 있는 것 같애, 경호업체엔 사람이 충분하지 않구, 출입국 직원들이 파업 할 수도 있다는데? 확실히 좋은 얘기는 아니잖아..."

롬니가 2002년 솔트레이크 올림픽 조직위원장 경험이 있다보니 자랑할 기회를 놓칠 수가 없었던거죠!

하지만 여기가 어딥니까, 바로 영국이에요......

인터뷰 나오자 마자 데이빗 캐머런 영국 수상이 앞장서서 롬니 디스를 시작했습니다.

“We are holding an Olympic Games in one of the busiest, most active, bustling cities anywhere in the world. Of course it’s easier if you hold an Olympic Games in the middle of nowhere.”

"우린 세계에서 가장 바쁘고, 활발하고, 북적거리는 도시에서 올림픽을 열고 있거든? 뭐 허허벌판에서 올림픽을 열면 당연히 쉽기야 하겠지"

다음 차례는 보리스 존슨 런던 시장, 장소는 60000명이 모인 하이드 파크.

" There are some people who are coming from around the world who don't yet know about all the preparations we've done to get London ready in the last seven years. I hear there's a guy called Mitt Romney who wants to know whether we're ready. Are we ready?"

"밋 롬니인가 뭔가 하는 얘가 우리가 준비 되었는지 알고싶다는데? Are we ready?"

물론 영국 언론도 빠질수 없죠!

결국 롬니가 "아니 내 얘기는 그니까..." 으로 시작하는 어디선가 많이 들어본 변명을 시전하긴 했는데, 

이 양반이 워낙 뇌를 안거치고 말하는 스타일이라 앞으로 영국 체류기간 동안 또 어떤 얘기들이 나올지 아주 흥미진진 해요!  

그리고 역시 사람은 때와 장소를 가려가면서 말을 늘 조심해야 한다는걸 깨달았습니다.
