Julianne Baird - Abendempfindung an Laura K.523 (Mozart)

Evening Feelings of Laura

Evening comes, the sun hath left the sky,

And the moon casts silvery beams;

So it goes that life's finest hours fly--

They but dance away, it seems.

Soon fly life's colorful scenes to their end,

The curtain comes rolling down;

Our play is done, and tears of a friend

flow fast on our burial ground.

Soon perhaps (now o'er me drifts an image,

Like a zephyr from the west),

I shall be released from life's pilgrimage,

And fly to the Land of Rest.

If thou shouldst then beside my graveside weep,

My ashes sadly viewing,

Then O friends, I shall appear with thee

As Heaven's breath o'er the wafting.

Grant me, dear, also thy tears,

And pluck a violet for me, for my grave,

And look down kindly upon me there,

With thy warm and soulful gaze.

Consecrate on tear to me, and oh! then

Feel no shame crying thus for me;

For thy tear shall shine in my diadem,

And my fairest pearl shall be!

Gundula Janowitz - Vier Letzte Lieder AV.150 - IV. Im Abendrot (R. Strauss)

At Sunset

We have gone through sorrow and joy

hand in hand;

Now we can rest from our wandering

above the quiet land.

Around us, the valleys bow;

the air is growing darker.

Just two skylarks soar upwards

dreamily into the fragrant air.

Come close to me, and let them flutter.

Soon it will be time for sleep.

Let us not lose our way

in this solitude.

O vast, tranquil peace,

so deep at sunset!

How weary we are of wandering---

Is this perhaps death?

Birgit Nilsson - 5 Songs After Poems By Bo Bergman - IV. Bon Till Natten (Grieg)

Prayer to the Night

Finished are the day's pleasures,

wild and brief.

Deep night, carry us

away in your arms.

On your merciful breast

shield our shame,

while the hours of forgetfulness

roll by without pain,

as an all-drowning river

glides coldly

over hidden crime

and sunken sin.

You who alone bring forgiveness

and answers,

gentle night, hold us

Kathleen Battle - Die Nacht (R. Strauss)

The Night

Out of the forest steps Night,
Out of the trees she softly steals,
Looks around her in a wide arc,
Now beware..

All the lights of this world,
All flowers, all colors
She extinguishes, and steals the sheaves
From the field.

She takes everything that is dear,
Takes the silver from the stream,
and from the Cathedral's copper roof,
She takes the gold.

The bushes are left, stripped naked,
Come closer, soul to soul;
Oh, I fear that the night will also steal
You from me.

Thomas Hampson - 12 Gedichte Op.35: No.8 Stille Liebe  (Schumann)

Silent love

If I could praise you in song,

I would sing you the longest song.

Yes, I would in every way

never tire of singing to you!

But what has always troubled me

is that always, only silently,

may I carry you, my heart's beloved,

in my heart's sanctuary.

And that, whatever I say aloud

or praise in joyful song,

you believe I carry more deeply

in my warm breast than you, my heart.

This agony has compelled me

to sing this little song,

but I am pierced by bitter sorrow

that you haven't heard even one note.

Thomas Hampson - 5 Lieder und Gesänge Op.127 No.1 Sängers Trost (Schumann)

A poet's consolation

Even though there be no sweetheart
To weep over my grave in time to come,
Yet the flowers will drop
Their gentle dew there.
Though no traveler linger there awhile
On his journey,
Yet the moon will shine down there
As she goes by.
And though in these meadows
No living soul should think of me,
Yet the field will,
And the silent grove.
Flowers, grove and meadow,
Stars and moonlight
That I sang, they will not
Forget their singer.

      Juliane Banse - Beau Soir (Debussy)

      Beautiful Evening

      When the rivers are rosy in the setting sun,
      And a warm shiver runs over the wheat fields,
      Advice to be happy seems to rise up from things
      And climb toward the troubled heart.

      Advice to taste the charm of being in the world
      While one is young and the evening is beautiful,
      For we are going away, as this stream goes away:
      The stream to the sea, we to the grave

        Elly Ameling - Der Nussbaum (Schumann)

        The Walnut Tree

        A walnut tree stands greenly in front of the house,

        fragrantly and airly

        spreading out its leafy branches.

        Many lovely blossoms does it bear;

        gentle winds

        come to caress them.

        They whisper, paired two by two,

        gracefully inclining

        their tender heads to kiss.

        They whisper of a maiden

        who thinks day and night long

        of... but alas! she does not herself know!

        They whisper - who can understand

        such a soft song? -

        they whisper of a bridegroom and of the coming year.

        The maiden listens, the tree rustles;

        yearning, hoping,

        she sinks smiling into sleep and dream.
