존 스튜어트와 스티븐 콜베어가 이번 주말에 랠리를 열었던 거는 아시죠?
모르시는 분들을 위해 간단히 설명하면,
존스튜어트는 미국 코미디 센트럴 채널에서 패러디 뉴스쇼를 진행하는 진행자입니다.
콜베어는 존스튜어트 프로그램에서 일하다가 독립을 해서 자기 쇼를 진행하고 있고요.
스튜어트는 주로 뉴스나 정치가의 모순을 들이대며 그들을 조소하는 유머를 구사합니다.
콜베어는 "막장 애국 수구"의 캐릭터를 연기하면서, 그들을 조소하지요.
아무래도 둘 다 리버럴에 가까운 지향을 가지고 있고요. 분명 코미디쇼임에도 불구하고,
근 젊은이들 대부분이 존스튜어트로부터 뉴스를 듣는다는 조사가 나오고,
CNN보다 더 영향력이 많다는 이야기도 듣는 프로그램입니다.
어쨌든 이들이 집회를 열었습니다. 항상 극단만을 말하고, 테러 위험만을 강조하는 걸
(특히 폭스 뉴스) 비판하던 존 스튜어트는 Sanity(제 정신)을 회복하자는 의미로
Rally to Restore Sanity라는 랠리를 열기로 했고요.
콜베어는 여기에 대항해서 March to Keep Fear Alive라는 랠리를 열기로 했지만
물론 이건 다 연기고 결국 둘은 같은 곳에서 함께 집회를 열었습니다.
오프라가 랠리를 지지해주고, 오바마도 멘션하는 등 큰 화제를 일으키더니
20만 명이 넘는 사람들이 워싱턴 DC에 모여서 집회를 즐겼습니다.
정치적인 내용은 없었고, 그냥 정신 좀 차리자는 의미의 콘서트 겸 쇼였지요.
그리고 랠리 마지막에 존 스튜어트가 잠시 진지하게 연설을 했는데
이게 꽤나 명연설이라서 살짝 번역해서 소개해 봅니다.
And now I thought we might have a moment, however brief, for some sincerity, if that’s ok;
I know there are boundaries for a comedian, pundit, talker guy,
and I’m sure I’ll find out tomorrow how I have violated them.
괜찮으시다면, 이제 잠시만라도 진지한 시간을 가져 볼까 합니다.
코미디언, 비평가, 평론가가 지켜야 할 선이 있다는 건 압니다.
내일이 되면, 제가 그 선을 얼마나 침범했는지 알 수 있겠죠.
I’m really happy you guys are here, even if none of us are really quite sure why we are here.
Some of you may have seen today as a clarion call for action, or some of the hipper,
more ironic cats as a clarion call for ‘action.’
Clearly, some of you just wanted to see the Air and Space Museum and got royally screwed.
And I’m sure a lot of you are here to have a nice time, and I hope you did.
와주셔서 정말 기쁘게 생각합니다. 사실 왜 모인 건지는 아무도 모르지만요.
어떤 분들은 이 랠리를 행동을 요구하는 목소리로 생각하실 것이고,
쿨하고 아이러니를 즐기는 분들은 "행동"을 요구하는 목소리로 보시겠죠.
물론 어떤 분들은 그냥 항공우주 박물관 보러 왔다가 완전히 망하신 거겠죠.
많은 분들이 즐거운 시간을 보냈을 거라 생각하고, 정말 그랬기를 바랍니다.
I know that many of you made a great effort to be here today, and I want you to know
that everyone involved with this project worked incredibly hard to make sure
that we honor the effort that you put in and gave you the best show we could possibly do.
We know your time is valuable, and we didn’t want to waste it.
And we are all extremely honored to have had a chance to perform for you
on this beautiful space, on The Mall in Washington, D.C.
오늘 많은 분들이 힘들게 여기까지 오신 걸 압니다. 이 프로젝트를 준비한 사람들
모두 여러분의 그 노력이 헛되지 않도록, 가능한 최고의 시간을 보낼 수 있도록
정말 노력했다는 것도 알아주셨으면 합니다.
여러분의 시간이 귀중하다는 걸 잘 알고 있고, 이를 낭비하고 싶지 않았거든요.
그리고 이 아름다운 공간, 워싱턴 DC의 내셔널 몰에서 여러분을 위해
공연을 할 수 있었다는 걸 대단한 영광으로 생각합니다.
So, uh, what exactly was this? I can’t control what people think this was,
I can only tell you my intentions.
그럼 도대체 이 랠리는 뭐였을까요? 사람들이 뭘로 볼지는 제가 조절할 수
없을 일이고, 제 의도가 뭐였는지를 말씀드릴 수 밖에 없겠지요.
This was not a rally to ridicule people of faith, or people of activism,
or to look down our noses at the heartland, or passionate argument,
or to suggest that times are not difficult and that we have nothing to fear.
이 랠리는 믿음을 가진 사람, 열심히 활동하는 사람들을 놀리는 것이 아닙니다.
우리나라나 열정적인 토론을 비웃으려는 것도 아니고,
이 시기가 어려운 시간이 아니고, 두려워할 것이 없다는 걸 말하려는 것도 아닙니다.
They are and we do. But we live now in hard times, not end times.
어려운 시간이고, 두려워할 것은 있습니다.
하지만 지금은 어려운 시간일 뿐, 종말의 시간은 아닙니다.
And we can have animus and not be enemies. But, unfortunately,
one of our main tools in delineating the two broke.
The country’s 24-hour, politico, pundit, perpetual, panic conflictanator
did not cause our problems, but its existence makes solving them that much harder.
우린 적의(아니무스)를 가질 수는 있지만 적(enemy)를 가져선 안됩니다.
하지만 불행히도, 이 둘을 구분하던 우리의 도구가 모두 망가졌습니다.
이 나라의 24시간 계속되는 정치쟁이, 평론가들, 끊임없이 패닉과 분란을
조장하는 사람들. 이들이 우리 문제들의 원인은 아니겠지만,
문제를 해결하는 걸 훨씬 더 어렵게 만들고 있는 건 사실입니다.
The press can hold its magnifying glass up to our problems, bringing them
into focus, illuminating issues heretofore unseen. Or they can use that
magnifying glass to light ants on fire, and then perhaps host a week of shows
on the sudden, unexpected, dangerous flaming ant epidemic.
언론은 문제에 돋보기를 들이대고, 문제에 초점을 맞추고 전에 보지 못하던
이슈들을 조명할 수 있습니다. 아니면 그 돋보기로 개미들에 불을 붙일 수도 있죠.
어쩌면 그 다음 한 주 내내 갑작스럽고 예상치 못했던, 위험한
불타는 개미 사태를 보도할 수도 있겠죠.
If we amplify everything, we hear nothing.
모든 걸 증폭시키면, 아무 것도 들을 수가 없습니다.
There are terrorists and racists and Stalinists and theocrats,
but those titles that must earned; you must have the resume.
Not being able to be able to distinguish between real racists and Tea Party-ers,
or real bigots and Juan Williams or Rick Sanchez is an insult, not only to those people,
but to the racists themselves, who have put in the exhausting effort it takes to hate.
Just as the inability to distinguish terrorists from Muslims makes us less safe, not more.
분명 테러리스트, 인종차별주의자, 스탈린주의자와 신정주의자가 있겠지만
그런 칭호는 노력을 해야 얻을 수 있습니다. 걸맞는 이력서가 있어야죠.
진짜 인종차별주의자와 티파티 운동가를 구분 못하고
진짜 편협한 사람과 후안 윌리암스나 릭 산체스를 구분하지 못하는 건
그들에게도 모욕이지만, 인종차별주의자에게도 모욕입니다.
그 사람들이 증오를 쌓기 위해 위해 얼마나 많은 노력을 했는데요.
테러리스트와 무슬림을 구분하지 못하는 것이 우리를 더 안전하게 하는 게 아니라
오히려 위험을 증가시키는 것과 마찬가지입니다.
The press is our immune system. If it overreacts to everything, we actually get sicker,
and perhaps eczema. And yet, with that being said, I feel good: strangely, calmly good.
Because the image of Americans that is reflected back to us by our political and media
process is false. It is us through a fun-house mirror, and not the good kind that makes
you look slim in the waist and maybe taller, but the kind where you have a giant forehead
and an ass shaped like a month-old pumpkin and one eyeball.
언론은 사람의 면역 시스템과 같습니다. 면역이 모든 문제에 과잉반응하면, 오히려 더 아파지고
습진이 생길 뿐입니다. 하지만 이런 이야기를 하고 나니 기분이 좋습니다.
이상하게도, 마음이 고요해집니다. 왜냐하면 우리 정치, 언론에 의해 비춰지는
미국의 모습이 거짓이라는 의미이기 때문이죠.
마치 귀신의 집에 있는 거울 같은 거죠. 날씬해지고 키가 커 보이게 하는 좋은 거울 말고
이마가 커지고, 엉덩이가 한달 된 호박 같아지고, 외눈박이가 되는 그런 거울이죠.
So why would we work together? Why would you reach across the aisle to a pumpkin-assed,
forehead, eyeball monster? If the picture of us were true, of course our inabilities
to solve problems would actually be quite sane and reasonable.
Why would you work with Marxists actively subverting our Constitution,
or racists and homophobes who see no one’s humanity but their own?
정말 그렇다면, 우리가 왜 함께 노력을 하겠어요? 호박 엉덩이에 외눈박이 괴물에게
왜 손을 내밀까요? 그런 모습이 진짜라면, 우리가 문제를 해결하지 못하는 것도
지극히 정상적이고 당연한 것이 되겠지요.
끊임 없이 헌법을 전복시키려는 맑시스트, 자기 밖에 모르는 인종차별주의자와
동성애 혐오자들과 왜 같이 일을 하겠어요?
We hear every damn day about how fragile our country is, on the brink of catastrophe torn by
polarizing hate. And how it’s a shame that we can’t work together to get things done.
But the truth is, we do. We work together to get things done every damn day.
The only place we don’t is here or on cable TV. But Americans don’t live here or on cable TV.
Where we live, our values and principles form the foundation that sustains us
while we get things done, not the barriers that prevent us from getting things done.
우리는 우리 국가가 얼마나 연약한 상태인지, 극단적인 증오로 인해 찢어지기 직전인지
매일 같이 이야기를 듣습니다. 또 우리가 함께 일을 해내지 못하는 게 부끄럽다고 하죠.
하지만 사실 우리는 하고 있어요. 우린 매일 같이 함께 많은 일을 하고 있죠.
그렇지 않은 곳은 저곳(국회 의사당)과 케이블 TV 속 뿐이지요.
하지만 미국 시민들은 저곳이나 케이블 TV 속에 살고 있지 않아요.
우리가 사는 곳에선, 우리의 가치와 원칙이 일을 해내는 과정에서
우리를 지탱해 주는 역할을 하지, 일을 하는 데 방해물이 되지 않습니다.
Most Americans don’t live their lives solely as Democrats, Republicans, Liberals, or
Conservatives. Americans live their lives more as people that are just a little bit late
for something they have to do. Often, something they do not want to do, but they do it.
Impossible things every day, that are only made possible through the little reasonable
compromises we all make.
대다수의 미국인은 민주당, 공화당, 진보와 보수만으로 살아가지 않습니다.
미국인들은 항상 자기가 해야 할 일에 조금 늦은 채 살아가고 있을 뿐이지요.
많은 경우, 그 일은 하기 싫은 일이지만, 어쨌든 그들은 해냅니다.
이런 불가능한 일이 매일 가능한 것은, 정당한 작은 타협을 하기 때문이지요.
Look. Look on the screen. This is where we are; this is who we are: these cars.
That’s a schoolteacher who probably thinks his taxes are too high. He’s going to work.
There’s another car. A woman with two small kids, can’t really think about anything else right now.
There’s another car, swaying, I don’t even know if you can see it.
The lady’s in the NRA and loves Oprah.
There’s another car. An investment banker: gay, also likes Oprah.
Another car’s a Latino carpenter. Another car a fundamentalist vacuum salesman.
Atheist obstetrician. Mormon Jay-Z fan. But this is us. Every one of the cars you see is
filled with individuals of strong beliefs and principles they hold dear.

저 사람은 세금이 너무 높다고 생각하는 학교 교사입니다. 직장에 가고 있죠.
저 자동차에는 어린 아이가 둘 있는 여자입니다. 다른 생각은 할 틈도 없지요.
(스크린이 바람에 흔들리자) 저기 자동차는 마구 흔들리네요. 보이시긴 하나 모르겠군요.
저 여자는 국가 총기 협회 회원이고, 오프라를 좋아합니다.
저 자동차에는 투자 은행에서 일합니다. 게이이고, 역시 오프라를 좋아하죠.
저 사람은 라틴계 목수입니다. 저 차는 근본주의자 청소기 판매원이죠.
무신론자 산부인과 의사. Jay-Z팬인 모르몬 교도. 이게 다 우리입니다.
여러분이 보시는 자동차 하나하나에 강한 믿음과 원칙을 가진 개인이 있지요.
Often, principles and beliefs in direct opposition to their fellow travelers.
And yet these millions of cars must somehow find a way to squeeze one by one
into a mile-long, thirty-foot wide tunnel carved underneath a mighty river.
Carved by people who by the way I’m sure had their differences. And they do it.
Concession by concession. You go, then I’ll go. You go, then I’ll go. You go, then I’ll go.
많은 경우, 자기가 믿는 원칙과 믿음은 옆에 있는 자동차와 전혀 반대되는 것이지요.
하지만 수백만 대의 자동차가 어찌어찌 이 좁은 길이 강 아래의 1마일에 폭 30피트의
터널로 차례대로 들어가지요. 의견 다른 사람들이 모여서 해내고 있지요.
양보와 양보를 통해서. 너 다음에 나, 너 다음에 나, 너 다음에 나.
Oh my God, is that an NRA sticker on your car? Is that an Obama sticker on your car?
Ah, well that’s okay, you go, then I’ll go. And sure, at some point there will be
a selfish jerk who zips up the shoulder and cuts in at the last minute.
But that individual is rare, and he is scorned not hired as an analyst.
세상에, 그 자동차에 총기협회 스티커 붙어있는 거야? 그거 오바마 스티커 아냐?
뭐, 그래도 괜찮아. 너 가고 내가 갈게.
물론 가끔씩 이기적인 놈이 마지막 순간에 새치기를 하기는 하죠.
하지만 그런 사람은 흔치 않습니다. 그리고 그런 사람은 욕을 먹지
절대 정치 평론가로 채용하지는 않지요.
Because we know instinctively as a people that if we are to get through the darkness and
back into the light, we have to work together. And the truth is, there will always be darkness.
And sometimes, the light at the end of the tunnel isn’t the promised land.
Sometimes, it’s just New Jersey. But we do it anyway, together.
왜냐하면 우리는 본능적으로 알고 있거든요. 우리가 저 어둠을 뚫고 빛으로 나가려면
우리가 함께 일해야만 한다는 걸요. 그리고 사실, 항상 어둠은 있을 거에요.
그리고 터널 끝의 빛이 천국이 아닐 때도 많지요.
때로는 그 빛은 그저 뉴저지일 뿐일 때도 있죠.
그렇지만 우리는 그래도 합니다. 모두 함께요.
If you want to know why I’m here and what I want from you, I can only assure you this:
you have already given it to me. Your presence was what I wanted.
Sanity will always be and has always been in the eye of the beholder.
And to see you here today and the kind of people that you are has restored mine. Thank you.
